Europe’s most valuable jump race, the Grand National, is back this weekend as some of the world’s finest horses will vie for the £1 million prize pool.

The Grand National Festival is a key part of British culture and brings in people from all walks of life. Using extensive data from irishracing.com we decided to give the results of the race a twist and present it as a league table featuring horses, trainers, jockeys and owners.

Methodology

We first collected the results of all races run at Aintree from 1994 to 2023 and then assigned points to horses, jockeys, trainers and owners in the following format:

  • Won race – 3 points
  • 2nd place – 2 points
  • 3rd place – 1 point

Using this points allocation system, we then generated the league table.

To maintain data accuracy and uniformity, the complete results were collected from 1994 to 2023.

The Horse League Table

It’s crowded at the top but the great Tiger Roll is the leading horse at the Grand National with six points. The Irish-bred thoroughbred won the Grand National in 2018 and 2019, which is good enough for him to top the table.

Comply Or Die and Hedgehunter are at the same points level but the former has a better points per race figure which places him in second place. Both horses have a Grand National win and a second place to their name.

Irish horses of course dominate proceedings at the Grand National with the top 10 all coming from Ireland. The first non-Irish horse to appear in the league table is Pineau De Re at 11th place with three points.

Trainers League Table

The legendary Willie Mullins achieved a century of wins at Cheltenham this year but he’s not the top dog at the Grand National, where Gordon Elliott reigns supreme.

Elliott has trained three winners, a runner-up and two horses that finished third, making his tally of 13 points the best in the Grand National League Table. Mullins is close behind with 10 points, having trained a winning horse, two runners up and two that finished third. He’s tied with Jonjo O’Neill who has a better points per race figure.

Lucinda Russell, who trained 2023 winner Corach Rambler is seventh with six points. She’s trained two winners - Corach Rambler in 2023 and One For Arthur in 2017.

Jockeys League Table

Davy Russell, who rode Tiger Roll to victories in 2018 and 2019 is the leader of the pack when it comes to jockeys. He became the first jockey since Brian Fletcher on Red Rum to win the Grand National twice in a row on the same horse.

Reigning champion Derek Fox who rode Corach Gambler (2023) and One For Arthur (2017) to wins is second. He’s tied with Leighton Aspell on points but has a better points per race figure.

David Mullins, who rode Rule The World to a Grand National Win in 2016 is close behind in fourth place with five points.

Owners League Table

When it comes to owners, JP McManus is the most successful in Grand National history with 18 points to his name. Trevor Hemmings (2nd place) and The Gigginstown House Stud have produced more winners than McManus but the Irishman has the edge thanks to more second and third place finishes.

Following the top three is the late David Johnson who owned 2008 winner Comply Or Die. He also owned horses that finished second and third at the Grand National.
