Florida Derby 2021
The Florida Derby is one of the key preps for the Triple Crown, offering 100 points to the winner on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
The latest renewal takes place on Saturday, March 27th at Gulfstream Park over one mile and one furlong, with the 2021 winner no doubt heading straight to the head of the Kentucky Derby betting market after the success of the last two winners of this race, Maximum Security and Tiz The Law.
Florida Derby Entries 2021
A host of the expected top-class sorts will make up the field given its status as a key trial for the Kentucky Derby. It is likely to be a closely-fought contest and given its recent illustrious roll of honour, it will be no shock if this year’s winner will go onto bigger and better things.
While we still have to wait to see which horses will be running the Florida Derby 2021, here are the results from the 2020 instalment:
Florida Derby Favourites 2021
While the confirmed field will not be announced until the gate draw in the week before the race, a host of potential superstar contenders are on track for the race. Last year, Tiz The Law was the likely favourite last time out and won the race. The three-year-old was already a winner at the top-level after winning the Champagne Stakes last year and made a winning return this term with victory in the Grade III Holy Bull Stakes. His trainer Barclay Tagg shipped his charge to Gulfstream and reportedly worked the fastest in a six-furlong breeze.
Among his rivals included Ete Indien, who was second to Tiz The Law in the Holy Bull before demolishing the opposition over course and distance in the Grade II Fountain of Youth Stakes, Grade III Nashua Stakes winner Independence Hall and Ajaaweed, who was be one of trainer Kiaran McLaughlin’s final runners before he quit the training ranks.

Florida Derby Previous Winners
The Florida Derby has a rich history of providing winners of triple crown races down the line, including the likes of Needles (1956) and Northern Dancer (1964). However, since becoming a part of the official Road to the Kentucky Derby in 2013, three horses have followed up in the big one. These were Orb (2013), Nyquist (2016) and Always Dreaming (2017).
After the controversy of the 2019 winner Maximum Security’s subsequent disqualification in the Kentucky Derby, the excellent Tiz The Law was an arguably even better winner in 2020.
Barclay Tagg’s colt took this race before going on to land the Belmont Stakes, while he was always a tough runner-up in the Kentucky Derby behind Authentic.
- 2020 – Tiz the Law (6-5)
- 2019 – Maximum Security (9-2)
- 2018 – Audible (9-5)
- 2017 – Always Dreaming (7-2)
- 2016 – Nyquist (6-5)
- 2015 – Materiality (7-2)
After the necessary shake-ups of the 2020 season, the Grade I Florida Derby returns to normal at Gulfstream in March and will carry a huge $1 million purse.
