Florida Derby 2021
The Florida Derby is recognised as one of the leading stakes races for three-year-olds in the United States and key trial for races such as the Kentucky Derby and the Triple Crown. The Grade I contest takes place over nine furlongs at Gulfstream Park in late March, usually five weeks before the Kentucky Derby. However, with that race suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic last time, the Florida Derby has the chance to be a standout race this year, and may certainly have a big impact for the classic generation once racing returns to normality.
Florida Derby Entries 2021
A host of the expected top-class sorts will make up the field given its status as a key trial for the Kentucky Derby. It is likely to be a closely-fought contest and given its recent illustrious roll of honour, it will be no shock if this year’s winner will go onto bigger and better things.
While we still have to wait to see which horses will be running the Florida Derby 2021, here are the results from the 2020 instalment:
Florida Derby Favourites 2021
While the confirmed field will not be announced until the gate draw in the week before the race, a host of potential superstar contenders are on track for the race. Last year, Tiz The Law was the likely favourite last time out and won the race. The three-year-old was already a winner at the top-level after winning the Champagne Stakes last year and made a winning return this term with victory in the Grade III Holy Bull Stakes. His trainer Barclay Tagg shipped his charge to Gulfstream and reportedly worked the fastest in a six-furlong breeze.
Among his rivals included Ete Indien, who was second to Tiz The Law in the Holy Bull before demolishing the opposition over course and distance in the Grade II Fountain of Youth Stakes, Grade III Nashua Stakes winner Independence Hall and Ajaaweed, who was be one of trainer Kiaran McLaughlin’s final runners before he quit the training ranks.

Florida Derby Previous Winners
The Florida Derby has a rich history of providing winners of triple crown races down the line, including the likes of Needles (1956) and Northern Dancer (1964). However, since becoming a part of the official Road to the Kentucky Derby in 2013, three horses have followed up in the big one. These were Orb (2013), Nyquist (2016) and Always Dreaming (2017).
Arguably its most controversial winner came last year. Maximum Security took the spoils and announced himself on the biggest stage but was denied victory in the Kentucky Derby itself after being demoted to 17th following obstruction in the race. However, he has since gone onto redeem himself with victory in the Haskell Invitational last year before culminating with success in the world’s richest race, the inaugural Saudi Cup, in February.
- 2020 – Tiz the Law (6-5)
- 2019 – Maximum Security (9-2)
- 2018 – Audible (9-5)
- 2017 – Always Dreaming (7-2)
- 2016 – Nyquist (6-5)
- 2015 – Materiality (7-2)
In recent years the race has been run for a hefty $1million in prize money but this will be changed this year. Despite keeping the track in operation during the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, the closing of the casino at Gulfstream Park and absence of on-track handle meant the purse was reduced.
It was run for $750,000 in line with other purse cuts to other races on the day, however, it should prove to be no obstacle for the entertaining spectacle expected. The purse is expected to return to $1million in 2021 assuming racing will proceed as normal.
